Shannon Staub Public Library has ribbon-cutting for bookstore
NORTH PORT — Even with the library open, Friends of the Shannon Staub Public Library had one more celebration.
The friends group, which was attached to the library long before its opening day this past fall, celebrated the official opening of its bookstore Wednesday.
The Shannon Staub Library is the second library in North Port and the tenth in the Sarasota County system.
It’s attached to the Suncoast Technical College-North Port.
The library has a makers space built from the ground up, and its Friend’s Bookstore shares space with the STC’s bookstore.
The Friends of the Library help fund many library activities through donations and purchases made in the bookstore.
On Wednesday, the group celebrated by holding the official ribboncutting, also honoring the library’s namesake, Shannon Staub.
Staub served 14 years on the Sarasota County Commission representing North Port, Englewood and Venice, and has always been an advocate for libraries.
“We’d be a struggling group without her,” said Liz Napoli, Friends of the Library president.
Napoli said the group decided to gift Staub not only the membership, but also a portrait to honor the living namesake. During her address to the group on Wednesday, she laughed about the fact that people ask who Staub was.
The portrait of Staub was taken by local photographer Monica Amaya — who also takes photos for the Sun — and will hang in the library entry way greeting visitors. Staub was all smiles during the event and thanked the crowd for their support.
Her only message to the North Port community was to not only come and visit the library but, most importantly, the bookstore, too.
“(I’m) really happy, (I’m) so proud of the Friends,” Staub said.
The Shannon Staub Public Library, 4675 Career Lane, North Port, is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information or questions, call the library at 941-861-1740.
