NORTH PORT — After a final setback, the new Shannon Staub Library will open its doors at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

The library was due to open on Oct. 17 alongside the new Suncoast Technical College North Port campus, but could not open due to connectivity issues. Now the 23,321-square-foot space will officially welcome its first visitors on Tuesday.

Shannon Staub Library is the 10th library to open in the Sarasota County system and the second in North Port.

The library is the first of its kind in the county in that it is sharing space with STC and has its own maker space and books catered to students on the STC campus.

Library manager Susan Totter said the library will continue to survey students and the public to provide a varied selection for all who visit the new library.

The library’s maker space is the first in the county to be built from the ground up and will feature 3-D printers, robotics items, a laser cutter and other science, technology, engineering and math items for the community to use. All other maker spaces in the county have had to be retrofitted into existing spaces.

Along with the maker space, the library has a dedicated children’s and teen space, as well as two outside gardens for the community and students to enjoy.

Shannon Staub Library also has meeting spaces within the library for students and the community as well a variety of seating. It will also feature the first shared Friends of the Library bookstore, which will have the usual gently used books but also supplies uniforms for STC’s classes.

Like its counterpart in Sarasota, North Port’s STC campus features the bistro for visitors to enjoy, according to Executive Director for Career and Technical Education Ron DiPillo the schedule for the bistro had not been set.

The school also shares conference space. The conference space is a joint venture between Sarasota County Schools and the city of North Port.

The city of North Port put in $715,000 toward the conference space located within the bistro in the school’s atrium. The entire project is a collaborative effort between the city of North Port, Sarasota County and Sarasota County Schools.

Project planning began in 2014, with groundbreaking and construction in 2016.

The school opened Oct. 17 welcoming 60 dual-enrolled students and seven instructors. Adult students at STC will begin in the spring and an expanded register of classes will be offered in a year or two according to DiPillo.

The Shannon Staub Library and Suncoast Technical College, 4445 Career Lane, North Port, will host its ribbon-cutting and official openingat 9 a.m. Tuesday.
