Know Someone Who Needs Internet Access? Our Libraries Can Help!
Mobile hotspots are now available to check out with your library card.
While mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are ubiquitous, it is estimated that almost 20% of Sarasota County residents do not have access to high speed internet. Hotspots are devices that use cellular data networks to connect you to the Internet without Wi-Fi or using your own cellular data.

New Year,
New Free Resource For You
|
|
Do you have a resolution for 2021? Here’s any easy one you can keep with the help of our partner, FreeWill: protecting the people you love by writing a legal will.
Though it may not be the resolution you expected to make this year, estate planning is an important step everyone should take. And in light of a new year and new beginnings, we wanted to share with our supporters an easy way to get peace of mind and protect the people you care about the most.
FreeWill is a free, online resource that guides you through the process of creating a will. It only takes 20 minutes to complete, and helps you think about the people that matter to you most.
In addition to protecting your loved ones, FreeWill also gives you the option to create a legacy and give a gift to the Library Foundation for Sarasota County. A legacy gift costs you nothing today, but secures the future of our libraries as an indispensable community service.

The Shapiro Foundation Supports Creativity in Sarasota
|
|
A big thank you to the Harry Shapiro Charitable Foundation, whose generous grant of $10,000 will help promote hands-on learning in the libraries’ Creation Stations. “Libraries are so important to our community. We’re delighted to support the creative and educational opportunities made available by the wonderful Creation Stations,” said Grace Shapiro in awarding this grant. The Creation Stations have been instrumental in creating much of the virtual programming now available from the libraries.

'Virtual Library Offerings Needed Now More Than Ever'
Sarasota resident Minnah Stein shares with us the many ways the library continues to serve us, even in challenging times.

The library has always been there for me when I needed it most. Growing up in Sarasota, the library was always a place where I sought refuge. When I was having a tough time, I would head to the library and sit down in the middle of my favorite aisle and forget about everything that was troubling me.
When I went off to college, I didn’t get to the library as often as I would have liked, but COVID-19 has taught me that just because I can’t be at the library doesn’t mean the library can’t be there for me. Although the libraries in Sarasota County are all open, there are also online options available that make me feel like I’m sitting in my favorite aisle in the library without leaving the safety of my own home.

What Are You Reading?
We asked Board member Vic Romano what he’s been reading lately.
|
|
The book I read recently which fascinated me to no end is The Great Influenza by John Barry. This book is immensely readable. It’s a narrative account of the deadliest pandemic the world has known. It’s also the story of the history of science and medicine, which at the time, were incompatible within the world’s cultures.
It’s also story about institutions, particularly Johns Hopkins University medical school and the men it educated and sent around the world to study this disease. I liked the way it read as a mystery. This illness put tremendous pressure on physicians, scientists, military personnel and politicians to find the source and the cure for the flu. It is a timely read.
