We Love Our Libraries!

Last week was National Library Week, a time to celebrate our nation's libraries, library workers' contributions, and promote library use and support. At the Library Foundation, we work to celebrate our libraries all year long.  Next time you’re in your favorite Sarasota library, join us in saying “thank you!” to the folks who work so hard to make our libraries the wonderful resource they are.

Donors Make A Lasting Difference

Bet this fish tank looks familiar to many of you! It’s the aquarium at Selby Library, of course.  Thanks to a wonderful gift from Charlie and Dee Stottlemyer when the “new” Selby Library was built, generations of children continue to enjoy this fascinating feature.

In Case You Missed It….

Earlier this month Renee DiPilato and Alisa Mitchell wrote a guest editorial for the Herald Tribune, discussing the strength of our library system and the critical role libraries will always play in our community.

Look What’s Coming to Our Libraries!

Thanks to a generous Equity and Access grant from the Edward K. Roberts Emerging Needs Fund at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, more than 400 new books will be added to the children’s collection, offering more inclusive stories for our youngest readers. Look for them soon!

Make a Gift

Two tax-savvy ways to make a difference.

Tax season is here! As our supporters are organizing their finances, many are surprised to learn about two simple ways to save on taxes while ensuring that our libraries are supported and thriving. By giving directly from your IRA, you can reduce your future tax burden and meet your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for 2021. And, if you have appreciated assets, you can avoid the capital gains tax by donating your stock directly to the Library Foundation for Sarasota County!

What Are You Reading?

We asked Board member Sarah Karon what she’s been reading lately.  (Turns out it’s our community’s One Book selection!)

I just read historian Frank Cassell’s “Suncoast Empire,” the story of Bertha Palmer’s global exploits and ultimate journey to the Gulf Coast. Although the Palmer name is ubiquitous in these parts, I never realized the extent to which the family, led by their brilliant matriarch, took part in creating the Sarasota we know and love today.

If Bertha were alive today, she would likely be a U.S. Senator, a Tech Titan, a real estate Supermogul or all three. This book brings early Sarasota County to life in such an enjoyable way, with glimpses into the creative and entrepreneurial successes of a truly stellar woman.
