Thank You, Selby Foundation!

A tremendous thank you to the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation, who recently awarded the Library Foundation a $50,000 capping grant to complete the fundraising for the new Pop-Up Library!  This customized outreach vehicle will be the first of its kind in Sarasota County, bringing the library’s technology, books, and programs to communities with limited access to library resources.

“The Pop-Up Library extends the library’s reach beyond its physical branches to serve everyone in our community. We deeply appreciate our donors and the Selby Foundation for making this outreach possible,” says Alisa Mitchell, the Library Foundation’s executive director.

Remembering Those Who Inspired Our Love Of Libraries

Library Foundation supporter Kimberley Pelyk recently made a donation to honor a very special person:
Norah and William (Bill) Travers, June 1941
Norah Travers is my grandmother; she died at 98 years old, soon after I moved to Florida. Norah was a war bride from Manchester, England; she met and married my grandfather, Bill Travers, during WWII.  My grandmother helped raise me, and library visits were a weekly routine for her throughout her life. While living in Toronto, Canada, I tagged along to the library on many weekends with Nana Norah.

Many Library Foundation supporters choose to give in memory or in honor of special people who also love libraries. You can join them and view a complete list of 2021-2022 tributes here.

Honoring An Extraordinary Life By Expanding Library Services

Last month we were privileged to dedicate the Dr. Everett Shocket Meeting Room at Gulf Gate Library. Barbara Shocket honored her husband’s lifetime of service with an incredibly generous gift that will provide programming for years to come at the library. Dr. Shocket was a frequent visitor to Gulf Gate Library and often enjoyed special programs and events. It was such a pleasure to have Barbara and grandchildren Michael and Amanda lead the dedication ceremony.
